Norway cannot yet be counted among the countries popular among domestic fans of foreign travel, but every year more and more Russians go there. As any tour operator will confirm, Oslo receives the largest number of guests from our country, but native speech can be heard more and more often in very small places of the Viking homeland, including such a place as Leknes.
It is located in the province (fylk) of Nordland, on the Lofonten Islands, in their geographical center. Even by very modest Norwegian standards, Leknes is a very small village: its population, according to the last census, is only about 2,700 people, and the total area of the territory is just over two square kilometers. It is considered a very significant economic and transport center of the archipelago.
Norwegian historians have not yet been able to establish who founded Leknes and when, but it is most likely that this event took place during the Early Middle Ages, and the first inhabitants of this settlement were probably Vikings. However, due to the fact that this place was not located on the seashore, but at some distance from it, it did not develop too quickly, and the center of the municipality became only in the first half of the 60s of the last century. In recent years, Leknes has attracted the attention of some very famous and quite wealthy companies, actively investing in various promising tourist centers and facilities. The fact is that this tiny Norwegian town is extremely interesting for fans of ecological tourism, which is so popular nowadays.
It goes without saying that Leknes cannot compare with the largest Norwegian cities in terms of attractiveness for foreign visitors. However, since nowadays, just like for vacations in Finland, the cost of vouchers to such remote places off the beaten tourist track is quite reasonable, it is possible to hear native Russian speech there as well.
Despite the fact that this small Norwegian place is located above the Arctic Circle, its climate is quite mild, and in winter the temperature very rarely drops below -5 °C. Thus, to enjoy the beauty of northern nature, you can go to Leknes at any time of the year, and practice shows that travelers are almost never disappointed.
As for architectural sights, there are absolutely none in this Norwegian northern village, so those travelers who go to this northern country to see the masterpieces of architecture, there is absolutely nothing to do in Leknes. But a visit to this northern town will surely bring great pleasure to fans of eco-tourism.
Those "advanced" tourists who arrive in this Norwegian city in the warm season have the opportunity not only to walk around the city itself and its immediate surroundings, but also to go on a great sea fishing trip. The fact is that not far from the Lofontaine Islands pass the seasonal migration routes of some commercial fish species, including cod. By the way, in Leknes there is a magnificent museum dedicated to this fish, and to be more precise, to its catching and drying. In winter, visitors to the town can indulge in such entertainments as watching the Northern Lights, as well as riding on dog or reindeer sleds.
In short, a visit to a place like Leknes can give inquisitive travelers a lot of pleasant moments. Experienced tourists know that Norway is the best place to celebrate New Year and Christmas, and a visit to its small island centers also guarantees a great time.
